what is the

history of

Estepona?

Estepona’s history dates to prehistoric times, with Neanderthal caves nearby. The famous caves of Nerja, Benaoján, and Ardales reveal ancient life. Phoenicians arrived 2,800 years ago, trading with Iberians before Greeks and Carthaginians took over.

Rome conquered the region in 218 BCE, ruling for 800 years and shaping the language and culture that became modern Spanish. The Visigoths followed, but in 711, the Moors arrived, leaving a lasting mark. Then called Astabbuna or Al-extebunna, the town developed its signature narrow streets, still visible in the Old Town today, reflecting its deep historical roots and cultural evolution.

Spain reclaimed Estepona in 1457, building a church over the old mosque and fortifying the town with the Castillo de San Luis to ward off Berber pirates. By the early 1900s, Estepona was a quiet fishing and farming village of fewer than 10,000 people. That all changed in the 1960s when Spain’s modern development boom transformed it into the thriving destination it is today.
