what is the

history of

Marbella?

Marbella’s history stretches back to the Paleolithic era, later becoming a Phoenician settlement in the 8th century BC and a Roman city, Salduba, by 1600 BC. Roman ruins, like the baths and Villa Romana de Río Verde, still stand today.

In the 6th century, Moorish rule transformed the town into Marbil-la, fortifying it against pirates. After the Catholic Monarchs reclaimed it in 1485, the old Muslim Medina gave way to the Plaza de los Naranjos, which remains Marbella’s historic heart. Marbella thrived in the 19th century as Spain’s steel hub but later shifted to agriculture and fishing. The 1940s marked a turning point when tourism and luxury living took over. Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe, enchanted by Marbella, opened the legendary Marbella Club, attracting royalty, movie stars, and billionaires.

In 1970, architect José Banús unveiled Puerto Banús, a luxury marina designed as a white Spanish village, now home to mega-yachts and a Salvador Dalí rhinoceros sculpture. Today, it welcomes nearly 5 million visitors yearly, cementing Marbella’s status as a playground for the elite.
